The roots for RBI Baseball begin with Tengen's controlling company, Namco. In December of 1986, Namco released Pro Yakyuu Family Stadium (aka Family Stadium) for the Nintendo Famicom, the Japanese version of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Family Stadium was a success and spawned numerous sequels across a variety of platforms in Japan. In 1987, Atari Games, the American arcade division and Tengen's parent company, ports Family Stadium to the Nintendo Vs. Series and releases Vs. RBI Baseball. The game was also a success and the programmer for Vs. RBI Baseball, Peter Lipson, then started on a console version for the NES. Although it also featured excellent gameplay, the MLBPA license is what set RBI Baseball apart from the rest of the baseball games in the late 1980's.

How to Play
- Starting the Game: To start the game, press the Start button on your controller. You will be presented with a menu screen where you can choose between various options such as “New Game”, “Continue”, “Options”, and “Exit”. Select “New Game” to start a new game.
- Selecting Teams: After starting a new game, you will be asked to select the teams. Choose one team to play against the computer-controlled team.
- Playing the Game: The game begins with the home team batting. Use the D-pad on your controller to move the cursor around the field. Press A to swing and B to run. Repeat these actions until you reach home plate, then press A again to hit the ball.
- Fielding: When it’s the opposing team’s turn to bat, you need to field the balls hit by them. Move the cursor around the field to position yourself correctly. Press A to throw the ball towards the batter.
- Scoring: Points are scored by getting players on base. This can be done by hitting the ball past the catcher, stealing bases, or being walked. Once a player is on base, they can advance to the next base by waiting for the batter to hit a ball past the catcher, or by hitting the ball themselves.
- Ending the Game: The game ends when either team has scored 9 runs, or after a certain number of innings have been played. If the game ends after playing a full number of innings, the team with the higher score wins.
Tips to Win
- Timing Your Swings: Timing your swings is crucial in RBI Baseball. If you time your swing just right, you can hit the ball further, increasing your chances of reaching home plate.
- Stealing Bases: Stealing bases is a great way to increase your team’s score without having to rely solely on hits. However, be careful as trying to steal too often can lead to errors and outs.
- Positioning: Positioning your players correctly on the field can give you an advantage. For example, placing a shortstop close to the base paths can prevent runners from advancing.
- Strategizing: Knowing when to bunt, steal, or swing can greatly affect the outcome of the game. Use your strategy wisely to maximize your team’s score.
