How To Improve PS5 Controller Battery Life?

PS5 Controller Battery Life

The PS5 controller battery life is not very good. It is the worst thing about the great DualSense controller.

The controller has many smart features. They can make gaming much better. But the battery does not last long enough. You often need to find a charger.

Like the PS4’s DualShock 4, the DualSense battery can die fast. This can make you stop playing sooner than you want to. It is a problem if you do not have an extra controller.

It is very annoying when you are really into a PS5 game and have to stop because of the bad battery life.

On average, how long does the PS5 controller battery last? Can you do anything to make it last longer? Luckily, there are a few things you can try to help a little bit. However, don’t expect a huge change or a perfect solution.

The good news is that Sony seems to be working on a new PS5 controller. This controller might have a battery that lasts for 12 hours.

This could help with the DualSense’s biggest problem. Still, 12 hours of battery life isn’t the best compared to other controllers. You would still need to charge your controller after using it for a day or two.

PS5 controller battery: How many hours does it last?

The battery in the PS5 controller can last for different amounts of time. It depends on what games you play and how you set things up. Using wired headphones will use up the battery faster than wireless ones.

Some games use a lot of the special features of the PS5 controller, like vibrations and triggers that can change how hard they are to press. These games, like Gran Turismo 7, will make the battery die sooner. Other games, like EA Sports FC 24, don’t use these features as much, so the battery lasts longer.

We have done a lot of tests. Most of the time, the PS5 controller battery will last between six and 12 hours after you fully charge it.

It is rare for it to last 12 hours. Six to eight hours is more common for most games. This might seem okay, but the best controllers for the Switch and Xbox can last more than 40 hours.

The PS5 will tell you when the DualSense controller’s battery is getting low. This happens well before the battery is empty.

When you see this message, don’t worry. You will often have up to an hour left before the controller stops working.

You might think that some of the many PS5 controller colors have better batteries. This is not true.

Sony made its new controllers a bit stronger. However, it did not make the batteries better. This also applies to the battery life of the PS5 DualSense Edge.

PS5 DualSense Edge: How many hours of gameplay on a single charge?

Sony’s top controller, the PS5 DualSense Edge, doesn’t fix the main issue with the regular PS5 controller.

The DualSense Edge only works for four to six hours before needing a charge. This is worse than the regular DualSense controller.

I talked about this problem in my review of the PS5 DualSense Edge Controller. It’s hard to accept this issue when the controller costs $199.

People have taken apart the DualSense Edge. They found it has a smaller battery to make room for its special features. Even though it uses power better for its size, it still doesn’t last long enough.

Maximizing your PS5 controller’s battery performance

The PS5 controller’s battery life is not very good. But there are ways to make it better. You can also avoid the problem completely.

One solution is to use a wire to connect the controller. This means you will never run out of power. But most people like to play on the couch without a wire. It’s not perfect for them, but it is an option.

You can also change some settings to make each charge last longer. Go to the PS5’s settings. Find “Accessories.” Choose “Controller (General).” Now you can change these things:

  • Turn down the volume of the controller’s speaker if you don’t use headphones. This can help the battery last longer.
  • Use less powerful vibrations. This is a good way to make the battery last a bit more each time you play.
  • Turn down the strength of the trigger effects. This is like lowering the vibration intensity.
  • Make the lights on the controller less bright. This probably won’t make a big difference, but it’s still a good idea to lower the brightness.

I saw something interesting about the DualSense Edge. When using the ‘Default’ profile, it doesn’t follow the settings you chose for the whole system.

The vibration strength stayed the same. This changed when I picked one of the three user profiles. There, I could adjust the settings for each one. Remember this if you feel like the Edge’s battery is draining too fast.

Like we talked about earlier, use a headset without wires. Don’t use one with a cord. This can help your battery last longer. Most of the top PS5 headsets have wireless options. They’ll stop your controller from having to power the headset.

You should also turn off the PS5 DualSense controller’s microphone when playing. This can slowly drain the battery. You’ll know the microphone is off when you see an orange light under the PlayStation button.
