What Does AFK Mean in Gaming?
AFK means “Away From Keyboard.” Gamers use it to show they are not at their computer and cannot respond or play.
You have likely seen or used AFK many times in gaming. You may have encountered this term, whether playing an MMO or a battle royale. Let’s explain what it means.

AFK History
AFK appeared in chat rooms and online games in the late 1980s or early 1990s. People needed a fast way to say they were stepping away from their computers.
At that time, being online meant sitting at a keyboard. Saying “away from the keyboard” was the best way to explain why someone was not responding.
The term stayed popular and became common in gaming, even on consoles and mobile devices that do not always use keyboards.
How AFK is Used?

AFK has different uses. Here are some examples:
- Short breaks – “BRB, going AFK for a snack.”
- In-game status – Some games let players set an AFK status to show they are unavailable.
- Explaining inactivity – “I died because I was AFK when the match started.”
- Noticing others – “Our healer is AFK. They haven’t moved in five minutes.”
- Passive play – “I’m AFK farming while doing my homework.”
- Rage quitting – Some say “going AFK” when leaving out of frustration.
Tip:
Let them know if you are playing with a team before you go AFK. They will appreciate the warning.
Now you understand AFK! Next time someone asks, you can explain it easily. Speaking of AFK, I need a break to grab a drink.
See you in the game!
