Bomberman
Bomberman is a robot engaged in the production of bombs. Like his fellow robots, he had been put to work in an underground compound at the center of the Earth. Bomberman found it to be an unbearably dreadful existence. One day he learned that any robot escaping from the center of the Earth and able to make it to the surface will become human. Bomberman jumped at the opportunity. Alerted to Bomberman's betrayal, large numbers of enemy characters were sent out in pursuit. Bomberman can only rely on bombs of his own production for his defense. Once there, will he really become human?
How to Play
Here are the steps to play the Bomberman game:
- Controls: Use the direction pad to direct Bomberman in any one of the four cardinal directions. Press the A button to drop a bomb on the tile that Bomberman is currently standing on. If Bomberman does not possess the Detonator power-up, the bomb will self-destruct after a few seconds. Press the B button to detonate the oldest bomb that you have remaining on the screen.
- Player Control: You control Bomberman throughout his efforts to climb the 50 floors of the underground plant and reach the surface in order to become human. You must accomplish two things on each floor: Kill every enemy, and reveal the exit which can only be used once every enemy is defeated. Every floor contains one power-up that can increase Bomberman’s abilities, as well as his chances for survival.
- Enemies: There are eight different enemies in the underground plant, each one a little different from the others. They move at a variety of speeds, with the fast monsters capable of overtaking Bomberman at full speed. They have varying degrees of intelligence. Some wander aimlessly about the stage, while others hone in on you and stay on your trail when you try to get away. Three of the enemies are capable of passing through walls effortlessly. They are much harder to kill, but if you happen to blow up a wall that they are inside of, they will be killed in the process.
- Power-ups: There are eight different power-ups. Some are more rare and valuable than others, but it’s a good idea to make sure you find the particular power-up hidden in every stage. To miss out on one is to put yourself, and Bomberman, at a disadvantage. Dying from an explosion or touching an enemy results in losing all the power-ups, with the exception of the “Bombs” and “Flames”, which are permanent.
- Bonus Items: There are six bonus items that are very difficult to come upon, each one more difficult than the last. Only one particular bonus item is available on each stage. Collecting bonus items requires knowledge on how they will spawn, and which stage the bonus item will appear.
Tips to Win
Here are some tips to help you win the game:
- Effective Bomb Placement: The trick to succeeding in Bomberman is understanding effective bomb placement. Bombs are more destructive when they are released in intersections instead of between walls. When they are placed in intersections, they explode in four directions. When they are placed between walls, they only explode in two directions.
- Early Stage Strategy: In the early stages, the enemies are your biggest threat. The best strategy to employ against enemies in the early stages is to get as close as you can, and trap them in closed-off alleys. The less room they have to roam, the better.
- Later Stage Strategy: In the later stages, the biggest threat to your survival is you. Without some of the better power-ups like Flamepass, Bombpass, or even Detonator, you have to be very careful not to set yourself up in a situation where you are caught in your own explosions.
- Bonus Stages: Roughly every fifth stage is a bonus stage. During the bonus stage, there are thirty seconds on the timer, and you can’t be killed. An unlimited number of one particular enemy will appear and you will be able to withstand the explosions from your bombs. You are encouraged to walk around and blow up as many enemies as you can within the time limit.
