What makes a solid American football video game?

    ElenaBy ElenaJanuary 22, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

Sports games have been around for decades. However, not every release has been worth dedicating some of your valuable time and attention to.

Alongside some excellent unblocked sports games, we’ve been exposed to an array of shoddy products, particularly when assessing the abundance of American football video games we’ve seen over the years.

For every Madden NFL 26, there’s an NFL Tour. As such, football fans are always on the lookout for solid games that accurately depict their beloved pastime.

What makes a solid American football video game

A discerning community of football fans wants to enjoy the finest gaming products, listen to leading podcasts like The Ringer NFL Show, and place bets after mulling over Super Bowl odds at DraftKings. Simply put, if a gaming product isn’t worth their time, they’ll find another title that is.

However, while many diehard American football fans know exactly what they’re looking for in an NFL-themed video game, some gamers who perhaps aren’t experts on the competition don’t.

So, with that in mind, below we highlight some key elements to look out for when assessing a potential football game to play.

    It needs to look good

First and foremost, if a football game doesn’t catch the eye from the start, then it’s not worth jumping into. The graphics need to be realistic, and the players need to be recognizable.

Of course, there are the occasional exceptions with 8-bit graphics, such as Retro Bowl, but generally, football gamers want a game that looks the part.

    Intuitive controls are key

The next thing to look out for is intuitive controls. This applies to all sports games, with intuitive controls making or breaking games in this category.

After all, if a gamer can’t control their players, then what’s the point of playing the game? Football gamers should feel in control of their players at all times, although it shouldn’t always be easy. In fact, NFL games are notoriously difficult, making it hard to master the controls in the early stages of the game.

In the end, though, it all adds to the appeal as gamers challenge themselves on the virtual field. However, if the controls simply aren’t worth learning, then they’ll immediately switch off.

    Accurate physics

Another key component of any leading football game is the title’s physics. If the tackles and blocks don’t mirror the sport in the real world, then gamers will download another product that offers a more authentic package.

Nothing should look scripted, while the game in question should also feature the same type of action fans around the world witness in the NFL on a weekly basis.

    Strategic depth is essential

    Strategic depth is essential

American football is a highly strategic sport where planning is always at the forefront. The game’s stop-and-start nature enables teams to pull off clever plays and produce game-winning moments. The sport’s strategic depth is also what makes it such an alluring pastime for many sports lovers out there.

As such, football games need to contain these same elements, be it an array of offensive and defensive schemes, plays that will outmaneuver opponents, and other options that allow players to control things like the line of scrimmage. If an NFL-themed video game lacks strategic depth, then it’s worth avoiding.

    AI that actually works

While we could focus on other areas, such as a good range of game modes, a fair AI system probably stands out more than most.

For example, if defenses don’t adjust to repeated plays accordingly, then it can become a tiresome gaming experience. Likewise, your team’s linemen need to block properly. Ultimately, if the game’s AI fails, then it’s a poor product.
