Is Red Dead Redemption Crossplatform?

Double Eleven Studios is set to release a direct port of Red Dead Redemption and its zombie-themed expansion Undead Nightmare on August 17, 2023, making the game available on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

However, the release has sparked controversy due to its $50 price tag for a bundle offering less content than previous Game of the Year editions.

Additionally, fans are disappointed by the absence of a PC version and have expressed hopes for a remaster or remake to leverage the advancements in graphics and gameplay seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018.

Previously, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X users could experience John Marston’s adventure through Microsoft’s backward compatibility program.

The game was also accessible via streaming on Sony’s PS Now service, which has since been integrated into the revamped PlayStation Plus.

However, Red Dead Redemption was removed from PS Plus last year, rendering it unplayable for PlayStation users unless they had access to a PS3.

Is Red Dead Redemption Crossplay?

Like other Rockstar titles like Grand Theft Auto, multiplayer is not cross-platform, restricting players from interacting solely with others on their respective platforms.

Multiplayer functionality is absent from the release of the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions of Red Dead Redemption.

Regrettably, it has been confirmed that multiplayer functionality will not be available in the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions of Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare. The port’s primary focus is to reintroduce the “classic stories” to modern platforms.

While this benefits fans who wish to revisit John Marston’s tale and the horror-themed spin-off, the absence of multiplayer could be better, as both games offer enjoyable cooperative and competitive play modes.

Initially released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption’s multiplayer included various modes, including free-roam exploration. Undead Nightmare’s multiplayer featured the famous “Undead Overrun” horde mode, which would have been a welcome addition.

Red Dead Redemption’s Multiplayer Remains Accessible on Xbox

At present, multiplayer functionality remains accessible for the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of Red Dead Redemption, although Rockstar’s official support appears redirected towards Red Dead Online.

Notably, the latter benefits from enhanced 4K textures and persists on the same servers as its predecessors.

The absence of multiplayer in the PS4 and Switch versions of Red Dead Redemption appeared inevitable following the trajectory of Red Dead Online. Red Dead Online faced criticism from its player base over several years due to a lack of substantial updates.

Rockstar’s announcement last year confirmed that no further major updates would be forthcoming as the studio shifted its focus to developing GTA 6.

Nevertheless, it remains regrettable that newcomers to Red Dead Redemption through this latest release will need access to the experience players enjoyed in 2010.
