Reading backwards is harder than it looks
Give it ten seconds and your brain starts cheating. It stops reading letter by letter and just recognises word shapes, which is why “hcraeS” turns into Search almost instantly but a sentence still takes real effort. Kids figure this out faster than adults, consistently, and it’s mildly infuriating to watch.
The name itself is the whole joke. Reverse Google and you get elgooG, which reads like something a fantasy novel would name a swamp.
Four things this box does
Flipping the whole panel is the closest to the classic google mirror version, where the layout mirrors and the text mirrors with it. Reverse text only leaves the layout alone and just runs the characters backwards, which is the version people actually want when they’re making a username. Upside down rotates it. Copy grabs whatever’s currently on screen so you can paste it somewhere.
Undo puts it back, because at some point you will want to read normally again.
Why anyone bothers
Mostly for messages. Reversed text still reads fine if the person receiving it holds their phone up to a window, and it slides past a lot of lazy filters. That’s the honest reason google search mirror gets typed into search bars every single day.
Related layout stunts
Mirroring is one of several tricks that just refuse to render the page correctly on purpose. Google askew tips everything on a slight angle. Barrel roll google spins it a full turn and lands upright. Google in 1998 doesn’t distort anything, it just rolls the design back twenty-odd years, which is disorienting in a completely different way.
